Gerard van Honthorst was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his genre scenes, history paintings, and portraits. He was particularly renowned for his skill in depicting nocturnal scenes illuminated by candlelight, a technique he developed after studying in Rome and being influenced by Caravaggio.
