approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: horizon line, fortress, boats.

  2. step 02

Establish the basic color washes for the sky, water, and fortress.

  3. step 03

Develop the sky with subtle gradations of color, blending blues, yellows, and whites.

  4. step 04

Layer the water with varying shades of blue, green, and brown, creating reflections of the sky and fortress.

  5. step 05

Add details to the fortress, including windows, walls, and the spire.

  6. step 06

Paint the boats, paying attention to their shapes, shadows, and rigging.

  7. step 07

Add small figures to the boats to create a sense of scale.

  8. step 08

Refine the details and add final touches, such as highlights on the water and fortress.

secondary · raw umber · payne's gray · cadmium yellow

Mix blues and yellows with white for the sky. Use burnt sienna and raw umber for the fortress walls. Create reflections by using slightly darker versions of the colors above them.
