study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic composition, focusing on the horizon line and the placement of major elements like the cliff, rainbow, and cow.

  2. step 02

Block in the sky with light, muted colors, paying attention to the subtle gradations and the rainbow's arc.

  3. step 03

Establish the base colors for the field and cliff, using a warm yellow-ochre for the field and a mix of white, ochre, and a touch of brown for the cliff.

  4. step 04

Begin layering details in the field, using short brushstrokes to create the texture of the grass and adding small touches of color for the wildflowers.

  5. step 05

Develop the cliff face, adding shadows and highlights to create depth and dimension.

  6. step 06

Paint the sea, using horizontal brushstrokes to suggest the movement of the water and reflecting the colors of the sky.

  7. step 07

Add the cow and figure, paying attention to their proportions and placement within the landscape.

  8. step 08

Refine the details, such as the foliage on the cliff and the texture of the clouds, and adjust the overall color balance as needed.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · titanium white · ultramarine blue

secondary · burnt umber · cadmium yellow · alizarin crimson

Achieve the muted tones by mixing complementary colors and adding white. The rainbow colors are subtle, so mix them with plenty of white and blend carefully.
