study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic composition, including the bridges, buildings, and river banks.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted orange and pink to the sky, creating a soft, blended gradient.

  3. step 03

Mix a light brown/ochre color and apply a thin wash to the river, leaving some areas lighter for reflections.

  4. step 04

Using a slightly darker mix of the same brown/ochre, paint the land masses and the base of the buildings.

  5. step 05

Add details to the buildings and bridges using a fine brush and a mix of gray, brown, and blue.

  6. step 06

Layer washes of diluted blue and purple to create atmospheric perspective in the distant cityscape.

  7. step 07

Add final details such as shadows and highlights to enhance the three-dimensional effect.

  8. step 08

Allow to dry completely and add any final touches or corrections.

color palette

primary · burnt sienna · yellow ochre · ultramarine blue

secondary · alizarin crimson · raw umber · Payne's gray

Achieve the sky colors by diluting alizarin crimson and yellow ochre. Mix burnt sienna, yellow ochre, and a touch of ultramarine blue for the earth tones. Add Payne's gray to darken the earth tones for shadows.
