some experience helpful

Recreating this painting will help students develop skills in gesture drawing, capturing likeness, and using a limited palette to create form and depth. It's also a good exercise in understanding how to use line and color to suggest texture and form.

study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the overall proportions and pose of the figure using a pencil or light-colored pastel.

  2. step 02

Focus on capturing the gesture and basic shapes of the body and clothing.

  3. step 03

Begin adding the main lines of the face and hair, paying attention to proportions and angles.

  4. step 04

Use burnt sienna pastel to define the darker areas of the face, hair, and hand, building up the values gradually.

  5. step 05

Apply blue pastel to create the stripes on the jacket, following the contours of the fabric.

  6. step 06

Use a blending stump or your finger to soften some of the lines and create subtle transitions between colors.

  7. step 07

Add final details and highlights with white or light-colored pastel to enhance the form and create a sense of depth.

  8. step 08

Refine the drawing by adjusting the values and adding any necessary corrections.

color palette

primary · burnt sienna · blue · cream

secondary · white

The cream color is the background. To achieve the skin tones, layer burnt sienna and cream. The blue is used directly, but can be softened with cream.

techniques

  • ·gesture drawing
  • ·cross-hatching
  • ·blending
  • ·line variation
  • ·limited palette

common pitfalls

  • →Getting the proportions wrong in the initial sketch.
  • →Overworking the drawing and losing the freshness of the lines.
  • →Using too much pressure when applying the pastels, resulting in a muddy or overworked appearance.
  • →Failing to capture the likeness of the subject.

materials

surface · toned paper

required

  • ·toned paper (cream or light brown)
  • ·burnt sienna pastel
  • ·blue pastel
  • ·white pastel
  • ·pencil or charcoal
  • ·kneaded eraser

optional

  • ·blending stump
