study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic composition, including the horizon line, the placement of the rocks, and the boat.

  2. step 02

Block in the sky with light blues and grays, paying attention to the shapes of the clouds.

  3. step 03

Paint the water, reflecting the colors of the sky and clouds. Use horizontal brushstrokes to create a sense of calm.

  4. step 04

Add the rocks in the foreground, using darker browns and grays. Suggest reflections in the water around the rocks.

  5. step 05

Paint the small boat in the distance, keeping it simple and dark.

  6. step 06

Refine the colors and values throughout the painting, blending and softening edges as needed.

  7. step 07

Add subtle details to the clouds and water to create more interest.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights to the rocks and water to create a sense of light.

color palette

primary · ultramarine blue · titanium white · raw umber

secondary · yellow ochre · burnt sienna · payne's gray

Mix blues and whites for the sky and water. Add a touch of yellow ochre or raw umber to warm the blues. Use payne's gray to darken the blues and create shadows.
