study guide

est. 15 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Begin with a light pencil sketch to establish the basic shapes and perspective of the buildings and street.

  2. step 02

Focus on the vanishing points to ensure accurate perspective.

  3. step 03

Start adding details to the main building on the left, defining the individual stones and roof tiles with a fine-tipped pen.

  4. step 04

Use hatching and cross-hatching to create shadows and depth, varying the density of the lines to indicate different levels of darkness.

  5. step 05

Move on to the other buildings, gradually adding details and textures.

  6. step 06

Pay attention to the light source and how it affects the shadows on the buildings and the street.

  7. step 07

Add the donkey figure, using similar line work techniques to define its form and texture.

  8. step 08

Finish by adding any final details and refining the shadows to create a sense of depth and realism.

  • →Making the line work too uniform and lacking variation in density and weight.
  • →Overdoing the details and creating a cluttered or confusing image.
  • →Not paying attention to the light source and creating inconsistent shadows.
