approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the horizon line and major shapes (field, trees, sky).

  2. step 02

Establish the basic color blocks for the sky using light gray and blue pastels, blending softly.

  3. step 03

Lay in the green areas of the distant field, using muted greens and browns.

  4. step 04

Begin building up the texture of the foreground field with layers of ochre, yellow, and brown pastels.

  5. step 05

Add darker values to the trees and foliage to create depth.

  6. step 06

Use short, broken strokes to suggest individual blades of grass in the foreground.

  7. step 07

Soften edges and blend colors with a blending stump or your fingers.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights and details to the field and sky.
