study guide

est. 12 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Prepare a toned canvas with a mid-tone brown.

  2. step 02

Lightly sketch the basic shapes and proportions of the head and shoulders.

  3. step 03

Block in the darkest areas of the background and figure with a dark brown mixture.

  4. step 04

Establish the main light source and begin to build up the highlights on the face.

  5. step 05

Carefully blend the edges of the light and dark areas to create soft transitions.

  6. step 06

Add details to the eyes, nose, and mouth, paying attention to the subtle shifts in value.

  7. step 07

Develop the texture of the beard and hair with short, broken brushstrokes.

  8. step 08

Refine the overall composition and add any final details.
