study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes and perspective lines of the room, table, and figure.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted raw sienna or yellow ochre to the entire paper to create a warm undertone.

  3. step 03

Begin with the background, painting the walls and ceiling with diluted washes of grey and brown, paying attention to the light and shadow.

  4. step 04

Paint the table cloth with a very light grey wash, leaving some areas untouched to represent highlights.

  5. step 05

Add the chairs, using a mix of burnt umber and black for the dark outlines and details.

  6. step 06

Paint the glassware and bottles on the table, using diluted greens, browns, and yellows to capture the reflections and transparency.

  7. step 07

Add the figure, using a mix of grey, brown, and black for the clothing and features.

  8. step 08

Add final details and highlights with a small brush, such as the details on the glassware and the highlights on the table cloth.

color palette

primary · raw sienna · burnt umber · payne's gray

secondary · yellow ochre · sap green · alizarin crimson

Mix browns with burnt umber and a touch of Payne's gray. Achieve transparent greens by diluting sap green with water. Use alizarin crimson sparingly for subtle accents.
