study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic composition, focusing on the placement of the river, land masses, and horizon line.

  2. step 02

Block in the large areas of color, starting with the sky and water, then the distant hills and foreground.

  3. step 03

Layer in the darker values of the trees and foliage, paying attention to the shapes and forms.

  4. step 04

Add the lighter values to the sand and grassy areas, creating highlights and shadows.

  5. step 05

Begin to refine the details, such as the reflections in the water and the textures of the trees.

  6. step 06

Use broken brushstrokes to create the impression of foliage and vegetation.

  7. step 07

Soften edges and blend colors where necessary to create a sense of atmosphere.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights and details to bring the painting to life.
