study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: the buildings, mountains, water line, and foreground elements.

  2. step 02

Establish the sky and water with diluted washes of blue and gray, creating a soft, atmospheric effect.

  3. step 03

Layer in the distant mountains with progressively darker and cooler tones to create depth.

  4. step 04

Paint the buildings and fortifications, paying attention to the subtle color variations and textures.

  5. step 05

Add the foreground details, such as the rocks, wall, and figure, using more concentrated pigments.

  6. step 06

Create reflections in the water by mirroring the colors and shapes of the objects above.

  7. step 07

Refine the details and add highlights to create a sense of light and atmosphere.

  8. step 08

Add the signature and date in the bottom right corner.

color palette

primary · ultramarine blue · raw umber · burnt sienna

secondary · yellow ochre · payne's gray

Achieve the muted tones by mixing complementary colors and diluting with plenty of water. Use ultramarine blue and burnt sienna to create grays and browns. Add yellow ochre to warm up the browns.
