study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main compositional elements: horizon line, large shapes of fields, and cloud formations.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted blue and grey for the sky, leaving some areas white for clouds.

  3. step 03

Begin layering washes of green and yellow for the distant fields, gradually increasing the intensity of the green as you move towards the foreground.

  4. step 04

Add darker greens and browns to define the trees and shadows, using broken brushstrokes to create texture.

  5. step 05

Paint the water areas with light blues and greens, reflecting the sky and surrounding landscape.

  6. step 06

Use a fine brush to add details such as individual blades of grass, small figures, and distant buildings.

  7. step 07

Glaze over certain areas to adjust values and unify the composition.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights with touches of white or light yellow.

color palette

primary · sap green · cerulean blue · raw umber

secondary · yellow ochre · burnt sienna · ivory black

Mix greens by combining blues and yellows, and create muted tones by adding small amounts of brown or black. Achieve atmospheric perspective by diluting colors with water.
