study guide

approach — 7 steps

  1. step 01

Begin with a light sketch of the overall composition, focusing on the placement of the figure and the table.

  2. step 02

Establish the darkest areas of the image, such as the background and shadows, using closely spaced lines.

  3. step 03

Gradually build up the mid-tones by adding more lines, varying the spacing and direction to create different values.

  4. step 04

Use cross-hatching to create darker areas and to define the forms of the figure and objects.

  5. step 05

Pay close attention to the details of the face, hands, and tools, using fine lines to capture their texture and shape.

  6. step 06

Refine the highlights by leaving areas of the paper untouched or by using very light lines.

  7. step 07

Add final details and adjust the values as needed to create a balanced and harmonious image.
