approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main figures and their relative positions, paying attention to proportions.

  2. step 02

Establish the horizon line and basic landscape shapes.

  3. step 03

Begin with a light wash of diluted warm browns and yellows for the ground and muted blues and grays for the sky.

  4. step 04

Layer in darker values to define the figures' forms and clothing, working from light to dark.

  5. step 05

Add details to the objects being carried, such as the clock, bags, and chair.

  6. step 06

Use dry brush techniques to create texture in the clothing and ground.

  7. step 07

Glaze with thin washes to unify the colors and create atmospheric perspective.

  8. step 08

Add final details and highlights to bring the painting to life.
