study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the hills, building, and trees with a pencil.

  2. step 02

Apply a thin, diluted wash of light brown or yellow ochre to the entire paper to create a warm base tone.

  3. step 03

Mix a pale blue-green watercolor wash and apply it to the foreground hills, allowing the base tone to show through in some areas.

  4. step 04

Add darker green and brown washes to define the shadows and contours of the hills.

  5. step 05

Use a fine-tipped brush and brown ink to outline the shapes of the building, trees, and other details.

  6. step 06

Add small strokes of ink to represent grass and foliage.

  7. step 07

Mix a light blue-gray wash and apply it to the sky and the distant hill where the building sits.

  8. step 08

Add final touches of color and ink to refine the details and create depth.
