study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the horizon line, the major wave shapes, and the position of the boat and rocks.

  2. step 02

Block in the sky with a thin wash of pale grey and cream.

  3. step 03

Establish the base color of the sea, blending greens and blues, and indicating the darker areas under the waves.

  4. step 04

Add the white foam of the waves using thicker paint and visible brushstrokes.

  5. step 05

Paint the rocks with a base of burnt sienna and umber, then add highlights and shadows to create form.

  6. step 06

Paint the boat in the distance, paying attention to its simplified shape and color.

  7. step 07

Refine the details of the waves, adding highlights and shadows to enhance the sense of movement.

  8. step 08

Add final touches to the beach and foreground, blending colors and adding texture.

color palette

primary · cerulean blue · viridian green · titanium white · burnt sienna

secondary · yellow ochre · raw umber · cadmium orange

Mix greens by blending cerulean blue and viridian green, and lighten with titanium white. Achieve the rock color by mixing burnt sienna with raw umber, and add highlights with yellow ochre.

techniques

  • ·wet-on-wet blending
  • ·broken color
  • ·scumbling

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the waves, resulting in a flat or static appearance.
  • →Using too much detail in the background, diminishing the sense of depth.
  • →Creating overly harsh or defined lines, losing the soft, atmospheric effect.
  • →Failing to capture the subtle color variations in the water and sky.
