study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Begin with a light sketch of the overall composition, focusing on the proportions of the figure and placement of the chair and table.

  2. step 02

Refine the sketch, adding details to the figure's clothing, facial features, and the shapes of the chair and table.

  3. step 03

Start adding value using light hatching to establish the basic forms and shadows.

  4. step 04

Build up darker values using cross-hatching in areas of deeper shadow, such as under the hat, around the fur, and in the folds of the clothing.

  5. step 05

Pay attention to the direction of the hatching to convey the form and texture of the different materials.

  6. step 06

Use a kneaded eraser to lift out highlights and refine the shapes.

  7. step 07

Add final details, such as the patterns on the table cloth and the intricate details of the clothing.

  8. step 08

Review the drawing and make any necessary adjustments to the values and details.

techniques

  • ·Hatching
  • ·Cross-hatching
  • ·Value shading
  • ·Line weight variation
  • ·Kneaded eraser highlighting

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the drawing and losing the freshness of the initial sketch.
  • →Creating overly uniform hatching, which can flatten the forms.
  • →Not paying attention to the direction of the hatching, which can make the forms appear confusing.
  • →Failing to use a full range of values, which can make the drawing appear flat.
