approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes and proportions of the head and shoulders.

  2. step 02

Establish the main light source and map out the areas of light and shadow.

  3. step 03

Begin shading the darker areas, gradually building up the values.

  4. step 04

Pay close attention to the contours of the face and hair, using subtle variations in tone to create form.

  5. step 05

Refine the details of the eyes, nose, and mouth.

  6. step 06

Add details to the clothing, keeping the values consistent with the overall lighting.

  7. step 07

Soften edges and blend tones to create a smooth, realistic effect.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights to enhance the sense of depth and dimension.

color palette

primary · sepia · white

secondary · light grey

Varying the ratio of sepia and white will create the different shades needed for the portrait. Use light grey sparingly for subtle highlights.

techniques

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the drawing and losing the freshness of the initial sketch.
  • →Failing to establish a clear light source, resulting in flat, unconvincing forms.
  • →Getting bogged down in details too early, before establishing the overall values.
  • →Using too much pressure when shading, making it difficult to blend the tones.
