study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes and composition, focusing on the placement of the ships, cranes, and figures.

  2. step 02

Establish the horizon line and the overall perspective of the scene.

  3. step 03

Apply the darkest values to the foreground elements, such as the docks and the side of the ship.

  4. step 04

Use hatching and cross-hatching to create texture and depth in the shadows.

  5. step 05

Gradually build up the lighter values in the background, using thinner lines and less ink.

  6. step 06

Add details to the ships and cranes, paying attention to their structure and form.

  7. step 07

Create the reflections in the water using horizontal lines and varying the pressure to suggest movement.

  8. step 08

Refine the linework and add any final details to complete the image.
