some experience helpful

Recreating this drawing will help students develop skills in capturing form through value and line, as well as understanding how to create a sense of depth and atmosphere with limited tonal range. It's a good exercise in expressive mark-making and understanding anatomy.

study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Begin with a light sketch to establish the basic proportions and pose of the head.

  2. step 02

Identify the main light source and map out the areas of light and shadow.

  3. step 03

Start building up the darker values with soft, broad strokes, focusing on the overall form.

  4. step 04

Gradually refine the details, paying attention to the contours and planes of the face.

  5. step 05

Use hatching and cross-hatching to create subtle gradations of tone.

  6. step 06

Add the hair, using loose, expressive strokes to suggest texture and movement.

  7. step 07

Reinforce the darkest areas to create contrast and depth.

  8. step 08

Soften edges and blend tones where needed to create a sense of atmosphere.
