study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes of the mountains, village, and foreground elements using light pencil lines.

  2. step 02

Block in the large areas of color, starting with the sky and mountains, using diluted washes.

  3. step 03

Add the darker tones to define the shadows and contours of the mountains and snow-covered fields.

  4. step 04

Paint the houses and trees, focusing on their simplified forms and colors.

  5. step 05

Add details to the foreground, such as the rows of crops and individual trees, using small brushstrokes.

  6. step 06

Refine the colors and values, layering paint to create depth and texture.

  7. step 07

Add final details, such as the lines defining the fields and the highlights on the roofs.

  8. step 08

Allow to dry and add a varnish for protection.

secondary · burnt sienna · cadmium orange · ivory black

Mix white with small amounts of raw umber and blue to create the various shades of snow. Use burnt sienna and cadmium orange to create the warmer tones in the trees and roofs.
