approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes and perspective lines of the buildings and archway.

  2. step 02

Block in the main colors of the sky, buildings, and street using thin washes.

  3. step 03

Add darker values to create shadows and define the forms.

  4. step 04

Layer in the red roof tiles and blue window details.

  5. step 05

Use short, visible brushstrokes to create texture on the buildings and street.

  6. step 06

Paint the figure in the foreground, paying attention to the light and shadow.

  7. step 07

Refine the details and add highlights to create a sense of depth.

  8. step 08

Add final details to the archway.
