some experience helpful

Recreating this painting will help students develop skills in figure drawing, understanding light and shadow on the human form, and creating a sense of depth using a limited color palette. Students will also learn to simplify complex forms and capture the essence of the subject with expressive brushstrokes.

study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes and proportions of the figure and the surrounding objects (bed, chair, window) using a pencil or thin brush with diluted paint.

  2. step 02

Establish the main light and shadow areas on the figure and the background with thin washes of color.

  3. step 03

Begin building up the color and value of the figure, focusing on the transitions between light and shadow.

  4. step 04

Add details to the figure, such as the contours of the muscles and the features of the face.

  5. step 05

Refine the background, adding details to the bed, chair, and window.

  6. step 06

Use thicker paint and bolder brushstrokes to create texture and visual interest.

  7. step 07

Pay attention to the edges of the forms, softening some and sharpening others to create depth.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights and shadows to enhance the sense of form and light.

color palette

primary · burnt umber · raw sienna · titanium white

secondary · ultramarine blue · yellow ochre

Mix burnt umber and raw sienna with varying amounts of white to create the skin tones. Add small amounts of ultramarine blue to cool down the shadows. Use yellow ochre to warm up the highlights.
