plate no. 3665
Wassily Kandinsky, 1907
This painting allows students to practice creating texture with linocut techniques and explore a limited color palette to create a moody atmosphere. Students will also learn about simplifying forms and creating a focal point through contrast.
technical profile
approach — 8 steps
Create a rough sketch of the composition, focusing on the placement of the monster, mountain, and moon.
Transfer the sketch onto a linoleum block.
Carve out the areas that will not be printed, paying attention to the details of the monster and the texture of the water.
Roll out a thin layer of ink onto a flat surface.
Apply the ink evenly to the linoleum block using a brayer.
Place a sheet of paper on top of the inked block and apply pressure to transfer the image.
Carefully peel the paper off the block to reveal the print.
Add details and highlights with additional layers of ink or other media.

primary · Prussian Blue · Yellow Ochre · Black
