study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: mountains, fortress, water, and foreground.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted yellow ochre and burnt sienna to the entire paper as a base tone.

  3. step 03

Paint the sky with diluted blues and grays, allowing colors to blend softly.

  4. step 04

Layer washes of browns, blues, and purples to define the mountains and fortress, building up darker values in the shadows.

  5. step 05

Paint the water with horizontal washes of gray and blue, reflecting the sky and landscape.

  6. step 06

Add details to the fortress and foreground with smaller brushes and more concentrated pigments.

  7. step 07

Use dry brush technique to create texture on the rocks and foreground.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights with diluted white or light yellow.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · burnt sienna · ultramarine blue

secondary · raw umber · payne's gray · white

Mix browns and grays by combining the primary colors. Use plenty of water to achieve transparent washes. Add small amounts of blue or purple to browns to create shadows.
