study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Create a light pencil sketch of the overall composition, focusing on the major shapes of the mountains, village, and sky.

  2. step 02

Identify the darkest areas of the image and begin carving these away from the woodblock.

  3. step 03

Gradually carve away lighter areas, using different line patterns to create variations in value.

  4. step 04

Pay attention to the direction of the lines to suggest form and texture.

  5. step 05

Proof the block frequently to check progress and make adjustments.

  6. step 06

Once satisfied, ink the block evenly and print onto paper.

  7. step 07

Allow the print to dry completely.

  8. step 08

Consider adding subtle washes of ink to enhance the values.
