study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the hills and bamboo groves, paying attention to their placement and scale.

  2. step 02

Mix a very diluted wash of black ink or gray paint for the distant background and sky.

  3. step 03

Apply the wash to the background, allowing it to be lighter towards the top to create atmospheric perspective.

  4. step 04

Using a slightly darker wash, define the shapes of the hills and the foreground, adding subtle variations in tone.

  5. step 05

With a fine brush and a darker ink or gray, begin adding the bamboo stalks, starting with the main trunks and then branching out to the finer leaves.

  6. step 06

Vary the pressure and angle of the brush to create different line weights and textures for the bamboo leaves.

  7. step 07

Add small details like rocks and clumps of grass to the foreground to enhance the sense of depth.

  8. step 08

Allow the painting to dry completely, then add any final touches or corrections as needed.

color palette

primary · black ink · gray

secondary · sepia

Vary the dilution of the black ink with water to achieve different shades of gray. Sepia can be added in small amounts to warm the gray slightly.

techniques

  • ·dry brush
  • ·atmospheric perspective
  • ·ink wash
  • ·line variation
  • ·layering

common pitfalls

  • →Using too much water, causing the ink to bleed and lose definition.
  • →Making the lines too uniform, resulting in a flat and lifeless appearance.
  • →Overworking the details, which can detract from the overall simplicity and elegance of the painting.
  • →Not allowing enough drying time between layers, leading to smudging and uneven tones.
