study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the mountains and the hut.

  2. step 02

Apply a diluted wash of brown/grey to the entire paper to create an aged effect.

  3. step 03

Using a larger brush, apply a light wash of diluted brown/grey to the mountains, leaving some areas lighter to suggest highlights.

  4. step 04

Add darker values to the shaded areas of the mountains and rocks, building up depth with multiple layers.

  5. step 05

Use a smaller brush to add details such as the trees, waterfall, and the structure of the hut.

  6. step 06

Create the stream and foreground with light washes and small, deliberate strokes.

  7. step 07

Add the dark foliage on the rocks with short, quick strokes.

  8. step 08

Include the calligraphy and seal in the bottom right corner (optional, but adds authenticity).

color palette

primary · sepia · ivory black · raw umber

secondary · payne's gray · burnt sienna

Achieve the various shades of brown and grey by diluting the primary colors with water or a mixing medium. Use more water for lighter tones and less for darker tones.

techniques

  • ·ink wash
  • ·dry brush
  • ·atmospheric perspective

common pitfalls

  • →Using too much water, which can make the colors bleed uncontrollably.
  • →Overworking the details, which can make the painting look stiff and unnatural.
  • →Failing to create enough contrast between the light and dark areas, resulting in a flat image.
  • →Not practicing brushstrokes before applying them to the final piece.
