Sir Samuel Luke Fildes was a British painter and illustrator known for his depictions of Victorian-era social realism and his later transition to academic portraits. He gained prominence for his illustrations in The Graphic newspaper, which highlighted the plight of the poor, and later became a sought-after portrait painter for the British Royal Family and aristocracy.
