some experience helpful

Recreating this painting will help students develop skills in layering colors to create depth and texture, as well as understanding atmospheric perspective to depict distance. Students will also learn to simplify complex forms into basic shapes and use brushstrokes to suggest detail.

study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes of the buildings, trees, and hillside, paying attention to their relative sizes and positions.

  2. step 02

Block in the sky with a thin layer of light blue, allowing some of the underpainting to show through.

  3. step 03

Establish the main color masses for the hillside and trees, using a mix of greens, browns, and blues.

  4. step 04

Begin adding details to the buildings, using lighter values for the sunlit areas and darker values for the shadows.

  5. step 05

Develop the texture of the trees and foliage with short, broken brushstrokes, varying the color and value.

  6. step 06

Refine the details of the foreground, adding highlights and shadows to create depth.

  7. step 07

Add final touches and adjust the overall color balance of the painting.

  8. step 08

    Allow to dry and varnish.

color palette

primary · titanium white · viridian green · ultramarine blue

secondary · yellow ochre · burnt sienna · cadmium red light

Mix greens by combining viridian green with yellow ochre or ultramarine blue. Create muted tones by adding a touch of burnt sienna to your colors. Use white to lighten values and create highlights.

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the details and losing the freshness of the brushstrokes.
  • →Failing to establish a clear value structure, resulting in a flat and lifeless painting.
  • →Using colors straight from the tube without mixing them, leading to a harsh and unnatural look.
  • →Ignoring the principles of atmospheric perspective, causing the background to appear too sharp and detailed.
