study guide

est. 12 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes and figures, paying attention to proportions and perspective.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted raw sienna or yellow ochre to the entire paper to create a warm undertone.

  3. step 03

Begin painting the sky with a diluted blue, allowing it to fade towards the horizon.

  4. step 04

Establish the basic shapes of the buildings with light washes of grey and brown, varying the tones to suggest depth and shadow.

  5. step 05

Paint the figures, starting with the lightest areas and gradually building up the darker tones and shadows in the clothing.

  6. step 06

Add details to the faces and hands, using small brushes and careful observation.

  7. step 07

Paint the background figures and details, using a lighter touch and less detail to create a sense of distance.

  8. step 08

Add final details and highlights, such as the textures of the buildings and the folds in the clothing.

color palette

primary · raw sienna · ultramarine blue · burnt umber · titanium white

secondary · red ochre · yellow ochre · payne's gray

Mix various shades of brown and grey by combining burnt umber, raw sienna, and ultramarine blue. Use white to lighten the colors and create highlights. Create the sky by diluting ultramarine blue with water.
