approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes and composition lightly on the canvas.

  2. step 02

Block in the large areas of color: sky, background foliage, and foreground grass.

  3. step 03

Add the darker values for the trees and shadows under the foliage.

  4. step 04

Define the shapes of the leaves and flowers with distinct brushstrokes.

  5. step 05

Layer lighter greens and yellows on top of the darker greens to create highlights.

  6. step 06

Add details to the bridge and other architectural elements.

  7. step 07

Refine the edges and blend colors where necessary.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights and details to create a sense of depth and texture.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · sap green · ultramarine blue · burnt sienna

secondary · titanium white · cadmium red · viridian

Mix greens by combining yellow ochre and ultramarine blue or sap green. Create variations in the greens by adding white or small amounts of red. Achieve the reddish-brown tones by mixing burnt sienna with cadmium red.

techniques

  • ·blocking in
  • ·layering

common pitfalls

  • →Over-blending the colors, resulting in a muddy appearance.
  • →Not varying the greens enough, making the foliage look flat.
  • →Losing the overall composition by focusing too much on small details.
  • →Making the brushstrokes too uniform and lacking variety.
