study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: the pitcher, the hill, the building, and the coastline.

  2. step 02

Mask off the pitcher to protect it from the background washes.

  3. step 03

Apply a light wash of diluted blue and grey for the sky, allowing it to dry completely.

  4. step 04

Paint the hill with a light green wash, adding darker greens and browns for shadows and texture.

  5. step 05

Add the building on top of the hill using a light grey wash, defining details with darker greys.

  6. step 06

Paint the ocean with varying shades of blue and grey, creating the illusion of waves and depth.

  7. step 07

Remove the masking from the pitcher and paint it with a base of light ochre. Add shadows and highlights with burnt sienna and white.

  8. step 08

Add the final details, such as the rocks on the coastline and the reflections in the water.

color palette

primary · cerulean blue · raw sienna · burnt sienna

secondary · sap green · payne's gray · titanium white

Mix various shades of green by combining blue and yellow, and create muted tones by adding a touch of complementary color. Achieve the pitcher's color by layering raw sienna and burnt sienna.
