study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Begin with a light pencil sketch to establish the basic perspective grid and the placement of the columns and arches.

  2. step 02

Refine the pencil sketch, adding details to the column capitals and the arches.

  3. step 03

Apply a thin wash of a light ochre or raw sienna to the entire surface to create a warm undertone.

  4. step 04

Using a fine brush, carefully outline the architectural details with a diluted brown or sepia ink or watercolor.

  5. step 05

Add shadows and tonal variations to the columns and arches using diluted washes of brown and gray.

  6. step 06

Paint the figures in the foreground and middle ground, paying attention to their proportions and clothing details.

  7. step 07

Add subtle details to the floor and background to create depth and atmosphere.

  8. step 08

Review and adjust the values and details to achieve a cohesive and balanced composition.

color palette

primary · raw sienna · burnt umber · ivory black

secondary · cadmium red light · ultramarine blue

Achieve the warm tones by mixing raw sienna with small amounts of burnt umber. Use ivory black diluted with water to create the various shades of gray for the shadows. Mix small amounts of red and blue for the figures' clothing.

common pitfalls
