study guide

est. 12 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic shapes of the mountains, trees, and sky.

  2. step 02

Block in the main color areas: blue for the sky, greens and browns for the mountains and ground.

  3. step 03

Add the darker values to define the shadows on the mountains and in the trees.

  4. step 04

Begin layering lighter greens and yellows to create highlights in the foliage.

  5. step 05

Paint the blossoms using small, broken strokes of white and pale pink.

  6. step 06

Refine the details of the tree branches and the shapes of the clouds.

  7. step 07

Add final highlights to the blossoms and the mountain peaks.

  8. step 08

Glaze with thin washes to unify the colors.

color palette

primary · titanium white · cerulean blue · sap green · raw umber

secondary · cadmium yellow · alizarin crimson · burnt sienna

Mix greens by blending blue and yellow, and create variations by adding brown or crimson. Use white to lighten colors and create highlights. Achieve the mountain colors by mixing blues, browns, and greens.

common pitfalls
