study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Begin with a light sketch to establish the overall composition and placement of the major elements (truck, figures, sheep).

  2. step 02

Refine the sketch, paying close attention to proportions and perspective, especially of the truck and cage.

  3. step 03

Start adding darker values to the areas of deepest shadow, such as under the truck and within the cage.

  4. step 04

Gradually build up the mid-tones, using hatching and cross-hatching to create a sense of volume and form.

  5. step 05

Focus on rendering the details of the figures and sheep, paying attention to their anatomy and expressions.

  6. step 06

Add highlights to create contrast and bring out the textures of the different surfaces.

  7. step 07

Refine the linework, adding definition and clarity to the edges of the forms.

  8. step 08

Make final adjustments to the values and details to create a cohesive and impactful image.
