approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Create a light pencil sketch of the overall composition, paying attention to proportions and placement.

  2. step 02

Start with a light wash of diluted brown or sepia to establish the basic values and shadows on the face and uniform.

  3. step 03

Gradually build up the values in the face, using layers of diluted watercolor to create smooth transitions.

  4. step 04

Focus on the details of the eyes, nose, and mouth, using a fine brush to add definition.

  5. step 05

Paint the hat, using darker values to create depth and texture.

  6. step 06

Add the details of the uniform, including the buttons, collar, and epaulettes.

  7. step 07

Carefully paint the tile in the corner, paying attention to the colors and patterns.

  8. step 08

Add final highlights and shadows to enhance the realism of the portrait.

color palette

primary · sepia · burnt umber · ivory black

secondary · cerulean blue · rose madder · yellow ochre

Mix sepia and burnt umber for the skin tones, adding small amounts of rose madder for warmth. Use ivory black diluted for the dark areas of the hat and uniform. Mix cerulean blue, rose madder and yellow ochre to create colors for the tile.
