study guide

est. 6 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the buildings, water, and boats.

  2. step 02

Apply a diluted wash of yellow ochre across the entire paper for the background.

  3. step 03

While the background is still damp, add slightly darker washes of yellow and brown to create variations in the sand and sky.

  4. step 04

Paint the water area with a light blue wash, leaving some areas white for highlights.

  5. step 05

Add details to the buildings and boats using small brushstrokes of blue, green, red, and brown.

  6. step 06

Create reflections in the water by mirroring the colors and shapes of the boats and buildings.

  7. step 07

Add small figures to the boats and along the shoreline.

  8. step 08

Allow the painting to dry completely and add any final touches or corrections.
