study guide

est. 15 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic composition, including the horizon line, terrace, and major shapes.

  2. step 02

Block in the sky with a light blue, gradually lightening towards the horizon.

  3. step 03

Paint the distant mountains using muted earth tones, layering lighter shades to suggest atmospheric perspective.

  4. step 04

Establish the base color for the terrace and lower section, a reddish-brown.

  5. step 05

Paint the checkered floor, paying attention to perspective and consistent tile size.

  6. step 06

Add the details on the terrace: the box, table with cloth, and other geometric elements.

  7. step 07

Paint the details in the lower section, including the shapes, lines and symbols.

  8. step 08

Refine the details and add highlights and shadows to create depth and dimension.

color palette

primary · red ochre · burnt umber · titanium white · cerulean blue

secondary · ivory black · yellow ochre · cadmium red light

Mix various shades of red-brown for the terrace and lower section by combining red ochre, burnt umber, and titanium white. Create the mountain colors by mixing burnt umber, yellow ochre, and white, with small amounts of blue for cooler tones.
