study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the fruit and the plate, focusing on their relative sizes and positions.

  2. step 02

Block in the background with the dominant gray-brown color, paying attention to the subtle variations in tone.

  3. step 03

Apply the base colors for each fruit: red for the apple and cherries, green for the pear, and a mix of blue and green for the grapes.

  4. step 04

Add highlights and shadows to the fruit to create a sense of volume and dimension.

  5. step 05

Paint the plate with its base color and then add the decorative grid pattern.

  6. step 06

Introduce the blue patterned areas around the plate, using thin lines to create the woven texture.

  7. step 07

Refine the edges of the shapes and add any final details, such as the stem of the pear.

  8. step 08

Add the signature in the bottom right corner.

color palette

primary · gray-brown · red · green · white

secondary · blue · black · light brown

The gray-brown background can be achieved by mixing burnt umber, white, and a touch of blue. Vary the proportions to create subtle tonal shifts. The green for the pear can be achieved by mixing yellow and blue, and adding white to lighten it.

techniques

  • ·color blocking
  • ·geometric simplification
  • ·pattern creation
  • ·blending
  • ·layering

common pitfalls

  • →Overcomplicating the shapes; keep them simple and geometric.
  • →Using too many colors; stick to the limited palette.
  • →Ignoring the subtle tonal variations in the background.
  • →Making the grid pattern on the plate too perfect; it should have a slightly hand-drawn quality.

materials

surface · stretched canvas

required

  • ·stretched canvas

  • ·round brushes (various sizes)
  • ·flat brushes (various sizes)
  • ·palette
  • ·water container

optional
