study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes and composition of the still life, paying attention to proportions.

  2. step 02

Define the outlines of each object more clearly, correcting any inaccuracies in the initial sketch.

  3. step 03

Begin adding the darkest areas of shading using cross-hatching, focusing on areas where objects overlap and cast shadows.

  4. step 04

Gradually build up the mid-tones by adding more layers of cross-hatching, varying the density and direction of the lines.

  5. step 05

Use finer lines and lighter pressure to create subtle gradations of tone and highlight areas.

  6. step 06

Pay attention to the texture of each object, using different line patterns to suggest the surface qualities.

  7. step 07

Refine the details and add any final touches to enhance the overall realism of the drawing.

  8. step 08

Erase any unnecessary pencil lines and clean up the edges of the drawing.

color palette

primary · black ink

secondary · white paper

Vary the density of ink application to create shades of gray.

techniques

  • ·cross-hatching
  • ·stippling
  • ·line weight variation
  • ·contour drawing
  • ·rendering form

common pitfalls

  • →Applying too much pressure, resulting in dark, heavy lines.
  • →Not varying the density of cross-hatching, leading to flat, lifeless shading.
  • →Ignoring the texture of the objects, resulting in a lack of realism.
  • →Rushing the process and not paying attention to detail.

materials

surface · smooth drawing paper

required

  • ·smooth drawing paper

  • ·eraser
  • ·ruler
  • ·kneaded eraser

optional
