approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Create a light sketch outlining the main shapes: figures, oven, and background elements.

  2. step 02

Block in the large areas of color with flat, even tones, starting with the lightest areas.

  3. step 03

Add darker values to create shadows and define forms, paying attention to the light source.

  4. step 04

Use thin lines to outline shapes and add details, such as clothing folds and facial features.

  5. step 05

Mix and apply the colors for the smoke, using soft edges to create a sense of movement.

  6. step 06

Add details to the oven and the rice cakes, using darker values to create depth.

  7. step 07

Refine the linework and add any final details.

  8. step 08

    Add the background details.
