study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes: Mount Fuji, the shoreline, and the boats.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted yellow ochre or a similar warm tone to the sky and the upper part of the mountain.

  3. step 03

Mix a pale blue-gray and apply a wash to the sky, blending it with the warm tone. Add a slightly darker wash to the upper part of the mountain to suggest clouds.

  4. step 04

Paint the water with a mix of blue and gray, using horizontal strokes to create a sense of calm. Add darker tones near the shoreline to create depth.

  5. step 05

Paint the boats using brown, black, and white. Add details such as the sails and rigging.

  6. step 06

Add the birds using small, quick strokes of black ink or paint.

  7. step 07

Paint the shoreline with a mix of brown and yellow ochre, adding details such as rocks and vegetation.

  8. step 08

Add any final details and highlights to complete the painting.
