study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Sketch the basic composition, including the horizon line, tree placement, and the sun's position.

  2. step 02

Block in the large areas of color: sky, sea, sand, and tree shapes.

  3. step 03

Begin refining the sky with a gradient from blue to pink, blending carefully.

  4. step 04

Add the pink sun and its reflection on the water.

  5. step 05

Develop the tree shapes, starting with the darkest tones and adding highlights to suggest form.

  6. step 06

Paint the details of the figure on horseback.

  7. step 07

Refine the sand texture with subtle variations in color and value.

  8. step 08

Add final details and adjust values as needed.

color palette

primary · ultramarine blue · titanium white · cadmium red light · yellow ochre

secondary · burnt umber · raw sienna

Mix blues and whites for the sky, adding a touch of red for the pinkish hues. Use red and white for the sun. Mix ochre, umber, and white for the sand, and blue and umber for the trees.
