approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes and layout of the terraces, mountains, and water features, paying attention to perspective.

  2. step 02

Establish the horizon line and the vanishing point for the perspective.

  3. step 03

Block in the main color areas for the sky, mountains, and water, using thin washes.

  4. step 04

Begin adding details to the terraces, defining the edges and the shadows.

  5. step 05

Layer the water with different shades of blue and white to create the illusion of depth and movement.

  6. step 06

Add the green vegetation along the edges of the terraces, using small, precise brushstrokes.

  7. step 07

Create the light beam by using a very light color and soft blending.

  8. step 08

Refine the details and add highlights to the water and the mountains.

color palette

primary · cerulean blue · burnt sienna · titanium white

secondary · sap green · ultramarine blue · yellow ochre

Mix various shades of blue and white for the water, using more white for highlights. Mix burnt sienna with small amounts of ultramarine blue to create the darker tones in the mountains. Use yellow ochre and sap green for the vegetation.
