some experience helpful

Recreating this painting will help students develop skills in atmospheric perspective and loose watercolor washes. It's a good exercise in capturing the essence of a scene rather than precise detail.

study guide

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic composition, focusing on the converging lines of the path and the placement of the trees.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted yellow ochre and burnt sienna to the sky area.

  3. step 03

Begin layering washes of green, yellow, and brown for the trees, allowing the colors to blend and mix on the paper.

  4. step 04

Use a darker mix of burnt umber and indigo to define the tree trunks and branches.

  5. step 05

Add details to the path and figures with a fine brush, using diluted washes of gray and brown.

  6. step 06

Strengthen the shadows under the trees and along the path to create depth.

  7. step 07

Add final touches of color to the foliage, using small, broken brushstrokes.

  8. step 08

    Let it dry completely.

color palette

primary · yellow ochre · burnt sienna · sap green

secondary · indigo · raw umber · titanium white

Mix greens by combining yellow ochre and indigo. Create various browns by blending burnt sienna, raw umber, and a touch of indigo. Dilute colors significantly for transparent washes.

techniques

  • ·wet-on-wet blending
  • ·dry brush texture
  • ·atmospheric perspective
  • ·layering washes
  • ·broken color

common pitfalls

  • →Overworking the details and losing the loose, impressionistic feel.
  • →Using colors straight from the tube without diluting them sufficiently.
  • →Making the darks too heavy and overpowering the lighter areas.
  • →Not allowing each layer to dry before applying the next.
