study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the basic shapes of the reeds and water areas.

  2. step 02

Dilute black ink or watercolor to create a very light wash and apply it to the entire paper as a base.

  3. step 03

Using a slightly darker wash, define the shapes of the reeds and the water's edge, allowing the ink to bleed and blend.

  4. step 04

Add darker values to the base of the reeds and in the water to create depth.

  5. step 05

Introduce green hues to the reeds, using a wet-on-wet technique to blend the colors.

  6. step 06

Add details to the reeds using finer brushstrokes and a more concentrated ink or watercolor.

  7. step 07

Paint small lily pads and other details like the small red dots.

  8. step 08

Allow the painting to dry completely and add any final touches or corrections.
