Goran Margetic, 2016
Recreating this painting will help students develop skills in layering transparent washes and creating atmospheric perspective. It also encourages loose, expressive brushwork to suggest details rather than rendering them precisely.
technical profile
approach — 8 steps
Lightly sketch the basic shapes and horizon line.
Apply a light wash of diluted blue and yellow for the sky, allowing colors to blend on the paper.
Paint the distant hills with a diluted mix of blue and grey, using a wet-on-wet technique to soften edges.
Add the mid-ground hills with a mix of ochre, burnt sienna, and a touch of blue, varying the color intensity.
Define the foreground with darker greens and browns, using more concentrated pigment.
Add details like trees and buildings with quick, gestural brushstrokes.
Allow each layer to dry partially before adding the next to prevent excessive bleeding.
Add final details and shadows to create depth and dimension.
