study guide

est. 8 hrs

approach — 8 steps

  1. step 01

Lightly sketch the main shapes: towers, walls, and horizon line.

  2. step 02

Apply a light wash of diluted blue/grey to the sky area.

  3. step 03

While the sky is still wet, add darker blues and purples to create cloud formations.

  4. step 04

Mix a pale grey-green wash for the ground and apply it loosely, leaving some areas lighter.

  5. step 05

Add details to the towers and buildings using a fine brush and diluted browns and greys.

  6. step 06

Use dry brush techniques to create texture on the walls and ground.

  7. step 07

Add final details with a fine-tipped pen or pencil to define edges and add architectural details.

  8. step 08

Glaze with diluted washes to unify the painting and adjust values.
